Jaycee’s Hearts
As soon as I saw Jaycee’s playing deck-themed release with Spellbinders, I knew what I wanted to create with it. With Valentine’s Day on my mind, I chose the heart dies for my first card.
Background
I used the Deluxe Deck Plate to make an impression on red foil cardstock. I cut it down to the same size as the plate afterwards. Then I corner chomped it and added a layer of Accent Opaque behind it. There was a little bit of cracking, so I used a red Sharpie to disguise it.
Hearts
I die cut 8 hearts of each of the three heart dies. To get this effect, I cut the bottom layer from a wine red cardstock, the middle layer from a shimmering pink cardstock and the top layer from white glitter cardstock. Of course I also stacked a layer of Accent Opaque under each colored layer, for dimension. Die cutting and gluing took a while but I think it was worth it.
There are lots of different ways I could arrange my hearts on the background, and in the end I went with a diagonal from top left to bottom right. That’s easier than a right angle grid and feels less static.
I started by gluing down the heart in the middle. To do that I held a ruler along the diagonal and placed the first heart aligned to it. Then I removed the ruler while pressing down on the heart. The center axis of the hearts is pretty clear, so alignment is important.
Next I placed the hearts above and below it, sighting along the diagonal. Then I worked outward from the center. When I was done I used my Spellbinders 9” shears to lop off the excess.
Before I added the card panel to my card base, I used my corner chomper on the right side corners of the base.
Sentiments
I foiled my sentiments with red Glimmer foil, to go with the red foil background. The main sentiment is from the You Are Everything Sentiments Press Plate. Every time I foil that plate I put the sentiments I’m not using right away in a mug on my desk. It’s pretty full and colorful right now.
The subsentiment is from the Glimmer of the Month from December 2023. It’s called My Heart Smiles and currently it’s only $5 on the Spellbinders site. First I foiled it with red Glimmer foil, then I used the leftover foil again for the negative. There were a few spots that didn’t foil, so I broke out the red Sharpie again to cover them up.
I didn’t use any embellishments, because I felt that between all the red foil and the white glitter there was already a lot going on on this card.
