Foiling Cardstock

I created three cards for a recycling-themed Instagram challenge hosted by @ThatCraftyGolden. First I used my Pinkfresh Solid Hot Foil Plate with all the cool-toned leftover foil to make my own foiled cardstock. As you can see from the photos, there’s always lots of foil left around the motif that you can use for small die cuts.

Die sets with lots of dies that are smaller than 10mm, are not really my jam. I tend to lose things that are that small. But there are die sets with e.g. floral elements that are in the 10-30mm range that are great for using up small scraps. It’s something I look for when shopping for die sets. The big ones, that take up most of an A2 card definitely have a wow factor and are easy to turn into a card on their own. But an assortment of decorative dies in the ¼” to 1” range can also create impact.

This time I foiled on cardstock colors that matches the foil, so any missing foil won’t be too noticeable. I like the texture that some motifs add on matching cardstock, so I’ll probably do this again. Previously I’ve used up leftover foil and foiled on contrasting cardstock. Most of the colored cardstock is from Recollections. I also used some pattern paper, although it didn’t foil very well. But the partial foiling is kind of a neat effect. It reminds me of mercury glass.

Die Cutting

Then I used Spellbinders Skating Into the Holidays, Small Die of the Month July ‘24 to cut out three pairs of skates and lots of flowers and foliage from the foiled cardstock. I cut the upper layer of the skates from three different silver foiled cardstocks.

The base layer I cut from Accent Opaque and ink blended on them with Distress Oxide Salvaged Patina, Speckled Egg and Tumbled Glass to go with my cool-toned theme.

Backgrounds

I placed these on backgrounds from my Box of Backgrounds. Two of them were one big background made with snowflake stamps heat embossed with a light blue embossing powder and sprayed with Mica Spray Stains in more blue and green tones. If the third background looks familiar, it’s because I created it for a project on foiling watercolor paper. It’s using the Hero Arts Twinkling Stars Hot Foil Plate and teal foil.

Sentiments

For my sentiments I used Simon Hurley’s Joyful Christmas Sentiments from last year. I foiled them with silver and Moondust foil. These sentiments are so pretty and just the right size and visual weight to hold their own on a busy holiday card. You’ll be seeing more of them over the coming months.
