Arctic Treat Box

For the box, I’m using a Sizzix die set called Seasonal House Gift Box. It creates a super cute mini milk carton. The die set includes dies for decorating the carton for different seasons. But I’m going to use other Sizzix die sets to decorate mine.

The stars of the show are Arctic Animals. It’s a Sizzix die set that creates a wolf, a penguin, an orca and a seal.

I’ve cut out all the layers from white Accent Opaque 100 lbs cardstock and I’m going to color them with my Ohuhu alcohol markers. Above is a table with all the markers I’m using for each animal. Each animal also gets at least one layer of Recollections White Glitter Cardstock.

Wolf

The wolf includes four layers with lots of detail.

For the wolf I’m using mainly three shades of blue grey: Blue Grey 02 with the code MG 020, Blue Grey II 3 and Blue Grey II 5. The eyes and noses will be Blue Grey II 09 for all animals.  I’m using white glitter cardstock for the ruff and the tip of the tail.

The Arctic Animals die set only includes 8 dies, which I really appreciate. Each animal has all the layers on a single die. That means that I have to cut them several times if I want to use different cardstocks for different layers. But that’s a trade-off I’m happy to make because I don’t have to worry about losing small dies.

Orca

The spot around the orca’s eye will be white glitter cardstock. I’m also using glitter cardstock for the water die cuts that belong with the orca.

I’m using BG II 09 for the eye, BG9 Pigeon Blue for the body and GG5 for the belly.

This treat box is part of a cardmaking hop on Instagram, organized by Amanda from That Crafty Golden. The theme is Monochromatic. I’ve chosen a blue-grey color scheme for all my animals. So this orca will not be very realistic.

Rocks

Next up are two rocks. On the packaging the seal is resting on a rocky island. I’m going to give the penguin a rock as well.

I’m starting out with the darkest color Green Grey 5, in the debossed parts of the die cut. Then I move on to the middle color, BG II 05 and the lightest color, Blue Grey 9, to blend out.

I’m applying the two lighter colors with the side of the brush nib, to avoid hitting the debossed areas. Then I’m adding some more of the darkest color to the center of the debossed areas.

Seal

On the seal, the flipper is going to be white glitter cardstock. The markers I’m using are Green Grey 1, Green Grey 20 and Blue Grey 9. The eye and nose are BG II 09 again.

Penguin

I colored the penguin with BG II 09 for the head and Pigeon Blue for the body.

I’m going to deviate from the color scheme for the penguin’s feet and beak. Those will be orange. I’m using Cream, YR 240 and Melon Yellow, YR 33.

The belly will be made from white glitter cardstock.

Background

I’m going to use another Sizzix die for the background behind the wolf and the seal. It’s called Tree Line. I’m coloring it in Pigeon Blue, Blue Grey II 5 and Green Grey 5.

Sentiments

For my sentiments I’m using a Spellbinders die set called Outlined Christmas Sentiments. It’s on sale for only $5 on the Spellbinders site right now.

I want the same sentiment on both flat sides of the milk carton, so I’ve die cut the sentiment four times from Accent Opaque and twice from white glitter cardstock. Then I’ve stacked them, so they’re nice and substantial.

Box

Let’s create the box. It’s really simple. You just cut the largest die from the Seasonal House Gift Box Set twice.

The die creates crease lines, so I’m folding and reinforcing them one by one. Most of the folds are mountain folds. It’s only the folds that create the triangle on the gable of the milk carton that are valley folds. A teflon bone folder helps with creasing.

I’m gluing the two die cuts together along one flap.

To carry my color scheme through the box, I’m ink blending it with Distress Oxides: Tumbled Glass, Iced Spruce and Uncharted Mariner.

Assembling the decorations

Now we have all the pieces we need for our monochromatic winter treat carton.

First I’m placing the Tree Line die cut along the bottom of the box on the middle two squares.

Then I’m placing the two rocks. The seal rock will be in front of the right side of the tree line and the penguin rock will be on its right.

I’m starting with the leftmost animal, the orca. I glue down the waves that belong with the orca first. Then I’m popping up the orca with foam tape. With the orca in place, I can add the splashes above it.

The wolf is going to sit in front of the tree line. Its ears will stick up a bit. So it’s good that it’s many layers of die cuts. I’m placing the wolf a bit to the left of center, to allow room for the tail. I used foam tape for the wolf.

Then I glue down the seal to the rock.

Before adhering the penguin, I add another layer of cardstock to the back of it, for stability. Then I pop up our flightless waterfowl on some foam tape.

Now that all the animals are in place, I can add the sentiments to the flat tops.

Assembling the Box

This box has a very sturdy bottom, so you can pile on the chocolate. First I glue two of the bottom layers together. Then I glue the sides and other two bottom layers together. I allowed that to dry completely.

If you’re going to put something in the treat box, now is the time to do that. But I closed up my box with liquid glue, so it would look finished in photos. You can also put double-sided tape and leave the release paper in place until you can fill the box.

That finishes our cute little arctic treat box.
